Get to know: Joanna Olivey
How did you get started in your career?
Around twenty years ago I was working for the Civil Service, part of my role was to source venues for external meetings. I started to realise that it was the part of the role that I enjoyed the most, so I pursued a career in events. I went on to get a job, which lasted over ten years, in a University Department which is a free venue finding service for the Colleges and non-academic venues in and around Cambridge.
What is your previous job experience?
Before I knew that I had a love for events, I worked in the retail industry for many years. My first job, at the age of sixteen was at a florist in Cambridge. I’ve worked in a couple of large department stores too. Being in a customer facing role from a young age helped me gain confidence and the skills I learned I have taken with me throughout my different careers.
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
That I’m a trained hair and makeup artist for film and theatre. I trained at the Greasepaint School of Makeup in London. I’m a creative person and enjoyed coming up with looks for characters in TV and theatre productions.
What are your favourite things to do outside of work?
My life is very busy, so I enjoy doing relaxing activities like yoga and indulging in spa treatments.
What would you say your proudest accomplishment is, both in your professional and personal life?
I’m proud of the way my career continues to grow and the experience I have gained along the way has led me to where I am today. Personally, as a single parent I’m proud of myself for raising such an amazing daughter.
Are there any upcoming projects / events you are excited about?
Every year we (the Conference and Events Team) host a Christmas lunch for our clients. It’s a chance to thank them for their business and continued support and something I look forward to.
Any advice for others in your field or newcomers to the industry?
My advice for newcomers to the industry is, well done you’ve chosen a career that can lead anywhere, its diverse and always interesting.
What made you want to work at the Møller Institute?
Our unique building and stunning grounds are unlike anything else in Cambridge. The flexibility we offer our clients and the support we give them and each other is unlike anywhere I’ve worked before. Building relationships with new and repeat clients is important to me and leads to future business growth which benefits everyone at the Institute.
