Visiting Leadership Scholar

A recipient of the New Englander of the Year Award from the 6 state regional business association the New England Council, Evan lectures on leadership in a changing world. As a former United States Chief of Protocol for the White House and Assistant Secretary of State with the rank of Ambassador as a Visiting Leadership Scholar he is uniquely positioned to bring many political leadership insights to the Møller Institute.

Evan is an experienced private senior corporate and non-profit Board Member who has been Director of Consulting for Gensler Architecture and Design for the practice of Higher Education, Arts and Museums in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He is Managing Director of the Civic Engagement APP Countable in San Francisco and Washington DC, Senior Advisor to the Chairman of Alliance Energy LLC of New York and Secretary of the Board, Friends of the American University of Afghanistan.

Evan was a Board Member and Chair of the Audit Committee for the global retail company GAP in San Francisco; Chair of the Board of the world renowned Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts; Member of the Board of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California; and on the Oversight Committee for Foreign Aid in Africa for President Clinton.

Evan began his public career as Personal Secretary to Governors John Volpe of Massachusetts and Russell Peterson of Delaware and Executive Assistant to US Senator Edward Brooke of Massachusetts. Then elected twice as Mayor of Pittsfield , Massachusetts , appointed Commissioner of Environmental Management for Massachusetts by former Governor Michael Dukakis and served President Carter as Chief of Protocol of the United States with the rank of Ambassador, National Treasurer of the Democratic Party and National Chairman of the 1980 Carter / Mondale campaign.

He led as President six institutions of higher education as a Full Professor of Public Policy, Political Science or Urban and Regional Planning at Middlesex Community College (MA), City College of San Francisco, Trinity College (Ct), the University of Hawaii, the New England Board of Higher Education in Boston and Westfield State University (MA). Evan has been Awarded numerous honorary degrees from University’s in America, Japan, Vietnam and India and holds earned BA, M.Ed. and Ed.D. Degrees from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), an M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and has been recognized and named by The Citadel as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Military College of South Carolina.  Evan has been inducted into the National Hall of Fame of the Boys and Girls Club of America in Atlanta and Morehouse College selected Evan for the Gandhi – King Award as being the ‘Drum Major for Social Justice in Higher Education’. He was presented the national Lewis Hines Child Labor Committee Distinguished Service Award in New York City “for his lifetime efforts on behalf of American Youth”.

Evan is the author of “Saviors of our Cities” and “Metroversities” both of which researched and ranked American universities and colleges for their economic and community service impact.
